Roka (ロカ, Roka)is a Mage who is in charge of creating the seasons in Aba Forest.[1]

AppearanceEdit

Roka's appearance

Roka is a young girl with light hair. Her hair is cropped short, only reaching the base of her neck[2] except for two bangs which fall down the sides of the her face upto her chest. Her irises are also light and each eye is partially covered by her hair.[3]

She clads herself in a simple dress with a thin sash running around her waist and being tied in the front, the ends hanging loose reaching the end of the dress. This ribbon appears to be purely decorative as it does not seem to tighten the dress around her waist. A pair of shorts with a floral pattern is worn under the dress, the legs ending near her knees in a jagged design. She wraps an extremely thick and somewhat gaudy muffler around her neck and a pair of fur boots adorns her feet. Under all this, she wears a one-piece, full-body undergarment which has a dark hue and has the fingers cut out.[3]

PersonalityEdit

Roka is an extremely responsible girl despite her tender age, diligently performing the task of creating seasons for Aba Forest. This sense of responsibility stems from her respect for her deceased mentor, who used to tend to this duty before her. She intends to head towards the future with the abilities as well as duties that she has inherited from her master. She is also kind enough to take care of a complete stranger whom she found in a weakened state in the forest.[4]

Although she lives an apparently isolated life in a desolate landscape, Roka shows no signs of fear or depression. Living in a place where only seasoned Treasure Hunters dare go, her house still remains in good repair, a testament to her survival capability. Detailed charts on the walls of her house as well as shelves and a study table piled with books indicate her studious nature while the presence of numerous potted plants in her house shows that she has an inclination towards gardening.[5]

HistoryEdit

Pre-Ice TrailEdit

Roka lived in Aba Forest along with her master, who was in charge of creating seasons for the forest. She taught Roka her Magic so that she could take her place when she passed away. This day arrived quite soon as she died when Roka was still a child.[6]

Ice TrailEdit

A month after her master's death, Roka rescued an exhausted Gray Fullbuster from Aba Forest's raging blizzard and allowed him to recover in her house. When the boy regained consciousness, the two exchanged introductions and she informed him about the forest's eternal winter as well as her job of creating the other seasons for it. She then showed him her latest creation, Cherry Ash, and stated that she wanted to live her life according to the things passed down to her by her master.[7]

Suddenly, a fishing line broke through the door of her house and the hook managed to snag the bag containing the Cherry Ash, snatching it away from Roka. Roka and Gray headed outside to confront the thieves, whose leader introduced the group as the Treasure Hunter Guild Fisher Man's Prize. They claimed that her Magic was an A-Class Treasure and tried to make their getaway, but were stopped by Gray, who not only retrieved Roka's Spell, but also sent the opposing Guild sliding off a frozen ledge. Roka could only watch the battle helplessly, concerned for Gray's safety.[8]

Exit of Aba Forest

Later, Roka lead Gray to the forest's exit and thanked him for his help, then inquired about his destination. Upon hearing about Gray's master and her wish for Gray to travel far and wide to learn and become stronger, Roka believed that they were complete opposites as she would be staying in Aba Forest for the entirety of her life so as to tend to its seasons. But Gray managed to convince her otherwise by saying that both of them are leading their lives according to their masters' teachings.[9]

Soon after bidding farewell to the young boy, Roka strolled around the forest to spread the Cherry Ash, causing the winter to be chased out by the onset of spring.[10]

Magic & AbilitiesEdit

Cherry Ash

Roka uses Cherry Ash

Season Creation Magic: This form of Magic allows Roka to change the seasons of a particular region. Roka learnt it from her mentor in order to carry on the duty of tending to Aba Forest's seasons after the latter's death. Although she is still a novice, she is able to change the season for the entire forest with her Spells.[6][10]

  • Cherry Ash (桜月灰 (チェリーアッシュ) Cherī Asshu): Roka uses this Spell to bring spring to Aba Forest. It is in the form of a powder, due to which Roka keeps it tied in a small cloth when not required.[11] She has to prepare it and then spread it around in the forest for it to take effect. It is powerful enough to immediately cease Aba Forest's furious blizzard and cause spring to bloom instead.[10]

QuotesEdit

  • (To Gray Fullbuster) "The things my master has passed down to me, and the things I've learned from my master mean the world to me ... I've got to start trying my best from now on."[12]
