Pause is a bespectacled young boy with long, light hair. His hair is neatly combed and carefully swept to the right, covering a large part of the right side of his forehead. Due to this, most of his hair falls down the side of his face on the right side, hiding his ear from sight. Only a few strands of hair hang down the left side of his face, most of it being tucked behind his ear, leaving it completely visible. The lenses of his spectacles are protected a thick, rectangular frame. He wears an extremely loose, striped shirt under a thick, full-sleeved turtleneck jacket, the shirt long enough to reach his knees while the jacket doesn't extend past his hips. . Three tags are present on the right side of the dark jacket, allowing the upper portion to be tightened or loosened as required. A dark glove snugly encases his right hand, but his left hand is left bare. He wears a pair of baggy, light trousers, the buttoned fly normally hidden from view by his long shirt. The ends of the legs are rolled up so that they don't interfere with his movements. The final piece of his attire is a pair of dark, thick-soled boots.
Pause is an extremely polite child. A cheerful boy, he is fond of the company of others, saying that the new people he meets on his journeys keep him from ever feeling lonely. Possessing a naturally quiet disposition, he hates troublemakers. He is quite perceptive, easily picking up on the intentions behind the actions of others. An intelligent child, he boasts a deep knowledge of Fiore's geography the animal kingdom and respects other creatures' right to lead a free life. In contrast to this bright personality, Pause is extremely easy to anger. When enraged, he becomes akin to a violent beast whose rampage can only be stopped by knocking him out.
When he met Gray, Pause was a under the complete control of his Guild Master, unable to even make any real friends. He carried out his instructions to the letter, even performing illegal actions such as kidnapping, all for the sake of his Guild. Despite being used as a tool, he never suppressed his emotions, finally culminating in his direct disobedience of his Master's orders and refusal to harm his first true friend, Gray. After Circus Night was apprehended by the Magic Council, Pause was finally freed from Kafuchi's control and has now become a regular member of a Guild.
Pause was orphaned at a young age. Alone, he had given up hope of surviving when he was taken in by Circus Night.
Some years later, while traveling by train to Magnolia, Pause met Gray Fullbuster, occupying the seat opposite the young Mage. The two exchanged introductions and Pause then began to read. But the peace was soon broken by a bunch of delinquents harassing the other passengers. Enraged, Pause took matters into his own hands and used his Magic to defeat them, but ended up going berserk and pulverized the entire carriage before Gray was able to stop his rampage by knocking him out.
Soon after regaining consciousness, Pause requested that Gray look over him if such a situation ever arose again on their way to Magnolia. The latter agreed, but the two soon began to wonder about the damage Pause had caused. Suddenly, they spotted two moles digging their way to the caboose and headed in the same direction. On entering the car, Pause realized that the moles were King Moles, who had come there to save their offspring from a Poaching Guild. He immediately lost control again and helped Gray and the moles wipe out the Guild before being knocked out by his ally again.
He woke up as the moles reunited and explained about their species' special characteristics to Gray. When Gray wondered whether he was without a family, Pause stated that the people he met on his journey kept him from feeling lonely. Their conversation was interrupted by a man in a hoodie, whom Gray recognized as a thief he helped capture in Foss. The man stated his intention to travel with them until he could exact his revenge on the Ice Mage, then introduced himself as Doronbo to Pause.
As the trio continued towards Magnolia, Pause expressed his joy at being with the other two, then informed Gray about Lilac Forest as the train approached it.< As they were passing through the forest, the train had a breakdown. Gray soon began to grow bored as the repairs took too long and decided to head off into the forest, Doronbo and Pause following him reluctantly. On the way, Doronbo's tirade about his own cautiousness reminded Pause about the arrest of a famous band of robbers due to one of their members' cowardice. Pause recounted the tale to his companions, who expressed disgust for the traitor.
The three soon happened upon a cave and decided to explore it, discovering a dilapidated room at its end. As they wondered about the existence of an abode in such an obscure place, they were suddenly attacked by the room's guard. They immediately realized that they had stumbled upon a Mage's secret hideout. As the three tried to evade the attacks, Pause listened to Doronbo confess that he is the traitor from the story Pause had narrated earlier, but that he would never betray his companions again. Gray then commanded the thief to escape and requested Pause to use his pages to blind the sentinel for a moment. As the young boy complied, his companion created clones of himself and gave the order to retreat. The duo was able to get out just in time as the Guardian brought down the roof upon itself in its frenzy to destroy the statues.
Pause commended Gray's efforts to ensure that nobody would be caught in that trap again. The two headed back to the tracks, although they believed that the train had departed. Astounded to see that it had not left, they realized that this was Doronbo's doing, the thief having laid himself in front of the locomotive in a desperate attempt to delay its departure long enough for his friends to come back. The three soon headed back to their seats, but not before Pause sent a mysterious message without his companions' knowledge.
The group finally reached its destination, Magnolia. On Gray's insistence, they searched for Fairy Tail, only to find it closed for the day. Famished, they then went to a café, where they ran into a drunk who overheard them talking about Fairy Tail and immediately began to insult the Guild. Pause excused himself by saying that he needed the restroom, only to hide from the group's gaze and send another mysterious message. But he was caught in the act by Doronbo, who questioned his motives, stating that he had noticed the boy sending the message in Lilac Forest too. Ignoring the former thief, Pause just walked away.
That night, he helped two of his guildmates seek out the drunk he encountered at the café and found him with his former allies. Capturing the three, he revealed the drunkard to be Wakaba Mine, a Fairy Tail Mage, then commanded his ally to incapacitate their prey. When Gray called out to him, he stated that they could leave no witnesses and ordered his ally to take him down too. The Mages then headed back to their base, a pub.
Despite having given Gray the cold shoulder in their last encounter, Pause contacted the hospital to inform them about Gray's condition and location. But this didn't go down well with his guildmates, who pummeled the young boy for having aided their enemy, leaving him lying in a corner of the room. The next day, when Gray sneaked in to save Wakaba, the Ice Mage was distracted by an unconscious Pause, leading to his discovery and capture.
At that moment, Pause regained consciousness. He confessed that he had come to Magnolia to destroy Fairy Tail for the sake of his Guild, to whom he owed his life. He further stated that his Master's orders were law for him. But, when commanded to kill Gray, he found himself unable to kill his first real friend. Disappointed in the boy, Kafuchi moved to perform the deed himself, only to be interrupted by the arrival of Fairy Tail. As the two Guilds clashed, Kafuchi realized that the fight was favoring his opponents and immediately used his Magic to absorb his underlings, including Pause. Despite this boost in power, he was eventually defeated by Makarov and forced to release everybody. Soon afterwards, Pause was arrested along with the rest of Circus Night.
Pause was soon released from custody, deemed innocent on the grounds that he had been coerced into following their orders. Alone, the young Mage met up with Doronbo and confided in him that he was too afraid to contact Gray after his betrayal. In X776, the two joined a Guild and, a year later, he finally mustered up the courage to write Gray a letter, apologizing for his treachery and expressing his hope that they would meet again.
