Layla Heartfilia (レイラ・ハートフィリア Reira Hātofiria) was Lucy Heartfilia's mother, and the wife of Jude Heartfilia. She was also a Celestial Spirit Mage.
Appearance
Layla was a beautiful young woman. She had soft brown eyes along with long blonde hair, which she usually wore in a bun along with a lacy baby pink band with ruffles on its edges which rests on her hair with her flicks and strands of hair framing her face. Like her daughter, Layla had a voluptuous figure. She and her daughter have similar appearances, to the point that Lucy is almost the spitting image of her mother.
Personality
Layla was a kind, caring, and compassionate woman who loved her daughter and husband immensely. She treated her spirits kindly, and was the one who taught Lucy that spirits were not tools, but living creatures and friends. She believed that they were just like every one else like equals.
History
Layla pregnant with Lucy
Layla Heartfilia was a Celestial Spirit Mage who worked in the merchant's guild, "Love & Lucky" where she met and fell in love with Jude Heartfilia. The two eventually decided to become independent when Layla became pregnant with Lucy. They chose her name when they noticed that the sign of the guild had the letter K missing so instead, it was read as 'Love & Lucy'; this made an impression on them so they decided to name their child "Lucy" if their child was a girl.[1]
Layla and Capricorn
Over the years, the Heartfilia Konzern became bigger and more powerful. Layla lived in an estate together with her daughter and staff.[2] At the year X764, Layla retired all of her Spirits due to her fading health. Each of her spirits were distributed to three different owners, each to be entrusted with a key until Layla's child was ready to inherit the spirits. However before they left, she made a final contract with Capricorn, where he committed to protect her family for all of eternity.[3] At the year X777 when she was 29 years old, Layla passed away.[4]
Layla once told her daughter something about the "The One Magic", as Lucy remembers this when Hades explains his goals.[5]

Celestial Spirit Magic (星霊魔法 Seirei Mahō): Layla, same as her daughter, had practiced Celestial Spirit Magic, which allows her to summon Celestial Spirits, Magical beings residing in the Celestial Spirit World, using the Keys of their respective Gates. [3]
- Multiple Summon: Layla has the ability to summon more than one Celestial Spirit at the same time, with three being the maximum number shown.[6]
Equipment
Her basic items are her Celestial Spirit keys. It was known that she had at least three different keys.

- Gate of the Water Bearer Key: Summons the Water Bearer, Aquarius.[3] (former)

Main article: Zoldeo  Zoldeo being entrusted with Capricorn's key Before she died, Layla had demonstrated a great trust for Zoldeo, one of the family's servants. When she decided to retire her Celestial Spirits, Layla entrusted him to take care of Capricorn's key, telling him to give it to her daughter if she ever decided to follow the path of Magic.[3] However, Zoldeo betrayed this trust and performed a taboo ritual on Capricorn, possessing the Celestial Spirit. He ultimately left the family and joined Grimoire Heart, bearing a deep hatred for Layla's daughter.[8]
Main article: Capricorn Capricorn promising to protect Lucy Capricorn was one of Layla's Celestial Spirits. During her career as a Celestial Spirit Mage, Layla came across Capricorn's key and made a contract with the goat spirit, demonstrating trust between them. Capricorn was very loyal to Layla seen when, before his key was entrusted to Zoldeo, he made a pact with her, promising to guard her family for eternity.[3] This promise was later fulfilled when he pledged his loyalty to Layla's daughter, Lucy Heartfilia.[9] Main article: Aquarius Layla and her three spirits Aquarius was one of Layla's Celestial Spirits. Though not much is known about their relationship, Aquarius respects Layla as she was willing to make a contract with her and eventually made a contract with her daughter, fulfilling her promise with Layla to aid her daughter when she decided to follow the path of Magic.[3] Main article: Cancer Cancer was one of Layla's Celestial Spirits.
