Jellal Fernandes (ジェラール・フェルナンデス Jerāru Ferunandesu)[4] is a childhood friend of Erza Scarlet. Before he lost his own memory, he was a Dark Mage who desperately sought to revive Zeref via the R-System. Jellal served as the main antagonist of the Tower of Heaven arc and is currently a member of Crime Sorcière.
Appearance
Jellal is a young man whose most prominent features are his blue hair and a red tattoo above and under his right eye,[5] which he has had since his childhood.[6]
As his Siegrain alter-ego, he dressed himself in elegant yet simple robes; consisting of a long white tunic with black stripes across the edges and on the upper part of the arms, a decorated collar, large straps connected to decorated buckles closing the inducement on the front over a dark shirt, and matching pants and shoes. He also sported a ring on his right middle finger,[5] and usually had the medallion attesting his status as one of the Ten Wizard Saints around his neck, hidden by his jacket's collar.[7]
Jellal himself is seen in much darker clothing, with his attire consisting of a white shirt with a blue tint under a hooded dark blue coat with light blue edges, two strings with shield-shaped pendants hanging down from the hood and a prominent golden symbol on the left part of the chest, reminiscent of Fairy Tail's mark, plus simple, loose, dark pants tucked inside laced boots.[8]
Under these clothes is a special fighting suit for melee combat, designed for his Meteor spell, revealing his toned and muscular body. In the manga, this takes the form of a skin-tight outfit. Said outfit is dark around the torso and mid-arm regions of Jellal's body, whilst the rest, such as his shoulders, forearm, and thighs down, is light in color. On his shoulder and hips, Jellal has small protrusions on his outfit, which, each, come with the three holes, serving the purpose of aiding him in his aerodynamic efforts. The rest of the suit is decorated by groups of three thin lines over the arms and legs, with a double set adorning the chest. In this attire, a metal necklace with a small pendant, highly reminiscent of the Wizard Saint's one worn by his Siegrain counterpart is visible around Jellal's neck.[9] In the anime, however, his fighting suit is portrayed as a simple skin-tight sleeveless purple shirt paired with extremely loose blue cargo pants (tucked inside simple boots), which is held up by a pale blue belt, and gloves.[10]
Later, after his revival, he is seen taking the clothes of a defeated Naked Mummy member to cover his partially torn fighting attire (in the anime, the clothes were instead Erigor's).[11][12] This new attire consists of a long black coat decorated by golden trimmings, white bands around his arms, two red medal-like ornaments on each side of his chest, a tight-fitting shirt reminiscent of the one in his old attire, and loose gray pants held up by a belt; the pants are tucked inside the boots.
Seven years later, while his physical appearance is virtually unchanged, save for his now longer, scragglier hair, his attire now consists of a dark coat, very similar to the one he stole from the Naked Mummy member, only with heart like designs running down the sleeves and sides of the coat. Beneath this, Jellal wears plated armor, which covers his abdomen, and dark pants bearing the symbol of Crime Sorcière. On top of all this, Jellal sports a dark, high-collared cloak.[13]
During the Grand Magic Games, when disguised as his Edolas counterpart, Mystogan, Jellal wears the same attire that he wore during his time in Earth Land, and even opts to use the former S-Class Mage's staves as his own.[14]
Personality
When he was young, Jellal was a very kind boy, and cared deeply for his friends. He was always cheerful and optimistic, despite his disposition as a slave.[15] After a failed escape attempt, he readily accepted punishment in Erza's stead, and never once lost his faith in the thought of being free.[16]
Later, as he was manipulated by what he thought to be Zeref's ghost, he drastically changed:[17][18] Jellal became obsessed with the idea of building a new R-System[19] and treated the slaves much better — to the extent that they didn't even think they were still slaves. But through this method of treatment, they did more work, which was Jellal's ultimate reason for treating them as such in the first place.[20] He sees his actions as a game, even if said game results in the loss of lives, his very own included.[21]
After he was revived by Wendy Marvell, he suffered from amnesia and seemed to be somewhat afraid of the world.[22][23] Though not remembering his own identity, he remembered the names Erza and Natsu Dragneel's names, respectively.[24][25] As he learned of his sins, Jellal wished to die, as he believed it to be his only form of atonement, but Erza convinced that through living, he can find a way to make up for his past horrid deeds.[26][27][28] Following these instances, even when arrested by the Knights and knowing he would be given the death penalty[29], Jellal remained calm and even happy, just as he did when he was a child.[4] Mavis Vermilion even commented that Jellal possesses the same "heart" as those in Fairy Tail, in spite of the fact that he isn't an actual member.[30]
Seven years later, after regaining his memories and having returned to his original personality, Jellal is now a calm, mature, intelligent, and kind individual. He has shown a cheerful side, as he often smiles when pleased, or when his friends are happy. While as "Mystogan", he makes sure he acts quiet and aloof, so as to not arouse suspicion to the fact that Fairy Tail is housing an escaped convict.[31] However, Jellal's regret towards his past deeds have caused him to feel the need to atone for his sins, which he did by creating Crime Sorcière: an Independent Guild dedicated to the destruction of Dark Guilds.[32] Despite this, he still feels he deserves punishment, as he told Ultear and Meredy that "punishment" is the theme of their guild.[33] It is this guilt that keeps Jellal from expressing his love for Erza, which she reciprocates, as he believes he doesn't deserve her.[34]
Despite his rather serious nature, Jellal does have a comedic side, as in his fight with Jura Neekis, where (a direct result of Ultear sabotaging his battle with the Wizard Saint) he has fits of hysterical laughter, as well as reacting strongly to the sensation of peppers he had in his mouth. Later, when he walked back to his teammates, Jellal felt ashamed, and stated that he had no words to describe his feelings of shame and embarrassment.[35]
History
As a child, Jellal was forced to help build the Tower of Heaven together with other slaves, such as Erza, Shô, Simon, Wally and Millianna, wherein he acted as the leading figure of their group.[15]
There, after a failed escape attempt and the reclusion that followed it, he was possessed by what he believed was the legendary Dark Mage Zeref, supplanting his former kind personality with a more violent one, which made him almost completely insane.[36][37][38]
He exiled Erza from the island and took control of the construction of the Tower of Heaven in order to resurrect Zeref, and thus create a world of "true freedom".[39] He bombed the ship that was supposed to take the slaves off the island, and told them afterward that it was Erza's doing, as she had gone insane with her newfound Magic Powers.[40] Believing that she had truly escaped on her own and thus betrayed them, the slaves helped him build the tower for the next eight years as a way of showing their gratitude for saving them from certain death.
While growing up, Jellal was taken under the tutelage of the Oración Seis leader Brain, having taught Jellal some of his skills and Magic, namely one of them being the Self-Destruction Spell.
Meanwhile, Jellal had worked his way into the Magic Council using a Thought Projection of himself, named "Siegrain".[1] Sometime after this, Jellal, as "Siegrain", ran into Erza Scarlet, and prevented her from attacking him by lying to her, saying that he was Jellal's twin brother.[41]
Synopsis
Macao arc
Sitting around a table with the rest of the Magic Council, Siegrain, backed by his fellow Council member Ultear Milkovich, disagrees with the rest of the Council by showing leniency toward Fairy Tail, much to the annoyance of the other Council members present.[5]
Lullaby arc
Siegrain and Ultear discuss, with the Council, how Fairy Tail — the one guild the Council is annoyed with — manages to show up and save everyone from Lullaby's terror. Despite Siegrain's arguments that the Council should appreciate Fairy Tail's actions, they continue to be frustrated by Fairy Tail's reckless behavior.[42][43] Meanwhile, Erza and Natsu's fight is interrupted due to Erza being arrested by the Council for the destruction caused by her, Natsu and Gray's battle against Lullaby.[44] Before she is brought before the Council, she meets Siegrain outside the court, where he reminds her not to mention "that".[45][46] He then joins the others Council members in prosecuting her, however, the trial is revealed to be a farce, and is instead just a formality to remind the world of the Council's power.[47] When Natsu interrupts the proceedings by "impersonating" as Erza, Siegrain smiles at his actions. Following this incident, Siegrain begins to take interest in Natsu's abilities.[48]
Galuna Island arc
Jellal (as Siegrain) is revealed to have been the one who set the events on Galuna Island in motion by sending Ultear, under the disguise of "Zalty", to use Lyon Vastia to revive the Demon Deliora so that he can control it. However, Deliora is found out to have been long-since dead, causing the mission to be a failure.[49]
Tower of Heaven arc
Jellal, in the Tower of Heaven, is being attended to by his intermediate with the Trinity Raven Guild, Vidaldus Taka and sends Shô, Simon, Wally and Millianna to capture Erza in order to use her as a sacrifice for Zeref's resurrection. The group accomplishes this, however, Erza manages to break free of her restraints and starts fighting with Jellal's underlings.[50][51]
In the meantime, Siegrain is seen with the other Council members at a Council meeting, discussing the Tower of Heaven. The Council knows that a mysterious man, Jellal, is the builder of the forbidden tower, however, they are unaware of any other significant information about him.[52] Siegrain, having called his fellow Councilors weaklings, tells them that the tower is too dangerous, and proposes that the Council use Etherion to destroy Jellal's creation.[53][54] With the help of Ultear, Siegrain manages to get most of the Councilors on his side, resulting in his need of only one final vote to ensure the firing of Etherion.[55]
At the tower, after Natsu defeats Wally and Millianna, Jellal goes to his chessboard (adorned with pieces that represent all the people in his "game") and knocks the two underlings' pieces over, symbolizing their defeat.[56] He is aware that Simon and Shô have betrayed him, however, Jellal is untroubled, and instead orders the impatient Vidaldus and the rest of Trinity Raven to make their move in his "game".[57]
Jellal then uses Magic to communicate with everyone in the tower, telling them it’s time to begin the "Heaven's Game", stating that the objective of said "game" is to prevent him from using Erza as a sacrifice for Zeref's revival by defeating the Trinity Raven. He then informs everyone that Etherion will soon strike, and destroy, the tower, giving them an unspecified time limit to reach the top of the tower.[58]
Back at the Council's meeting, as a final push to get the last vote he needs, Siegrain tells the Council that Jellal is trying to use the tower to bring back the Dark Mage Zeref, stunning the Council,[59] and causing Siegrain's proposition to win, with Yajima remaining the only one against firing Etherion.[60] When asked if he is ready to accept all of the consequences that go with the firing of Etherion, Siegrain replies for Yajima to "wait and see".[61]
Jellal continues to knock down pieces on his chess board as the battles in the tower come to an end, until Erza defeats Ikaruga and reaches him. As Erza prepares to fight him, Jellal states that, regardless of his own loss or victory, she will be a sacrifice for Zeref.[62] Jellal then announces that there is seven minutes left until Etherion hits, and invites Erza to take full advantage of said minutes, attacking her with his Darkness Magic upon finishing his thought. Erza manages to overpower all of Jellal's attacks and slice him with her sword, bringing him to the ground; Erza then gets on top of Jellal and points her sword at his throat. She tells her former friend that he has failed at completing the R-System, as the tower does not have the Magic Power required to perform the resurrection: at least 2.7 Billion Edeas.
As Erza claims she'll just force Jellal to wait for Etherion's fall to destroy them both, Jellal claims that that isn't such a bad idea, as his body is possessed by Zeref, and he is nothing more than Zeref's tool, unable to be saved by anyone. Erza refuses his invitation to kill him, and the two hug each other, waiting for the satellite beam to help them atone for both of their "sins". Etherion hits the tower, completely destroying the outer structure, but leaving everyone inside it unharmed.[63] Surprised to be alive after the blast, Erza looks around and notices that the true inner structure of the tower is, in fact, a gigantic absorption Lacrima. Jellal laughs maniacally, claiming to have succeeded in his goal, and explains that Etherion provided the tower with the required 2.7 Billion Edeas necessary to bring Zeref back to life.[64][65]
In Era, everyone is stunned to see the tower still standing, and an angry Yajima questions Siegrain, who, without answering, immediately disappears. He soon reappears in the Tower Of Heaven, where Erza and Jellal are. The both of them then proceed to say that Siegrain and Jellal are one and the same.[66]
After the two merge back together, Jellal's Magic Power is fully restored.[67] Jellal and Erza start fighting again, this time with Erza being dominated by Jellal's restored power. Jellal's Bind Snake spell spreads on Erza's body, restraining her and preventing her from moving. Erza is then forced into the R-System crystal to be sacrificed, however, Natsu suddenly appears and pulls her out. Erza warns Natsu to leave her, as Jellal is too strong, but he refuses and knocks her out. He then prepares to fight Jellal, who gladly accepts the challenge.[68]
Despite being repeatedly struck by Natsu's Fire Dragon Slayer Magic Spells, Jellal remains unharmed and belittles Natsu's abilities. He then proceeds to utilize his Heavenly Body Magic, delivering blows unto Natsu with remarkable speed. However, Natsu rises, having heard Jellal comment on the leakage of Magic Power wrought from damage done to the tower.[69]
Natsu's arrogance and further damage done to the tower greatly infuriates Jellal, who, in his fury, prepares to cast one of his strongest spells. Erza, awake and aware of the spell's power, defends Natsu with her body. Paying Erza no mind, Jellal launches his Altairis towards them, however, Simon appears and shields the two with his body, much like Erza had intended for herself, and dies as a result. Jellal then proceeds to berate Simon for his action, calling it foolish and useless. Such an action prompts Natsu to angrily hit Jellal; Natsu walks over and eats some of the broken pieces of Etherion-infused Lacrima.[70] Natsu eventually, much to Jellal's disbelief, manages to resonate with the Etherion, and enters Dragon Force, resulting in Jellal being on the receiving end of a brutal counterattack.[71]
Jellal briefly escapes him with Meteor, but continues to be outclassed by Natsu's newfound strength. He refuses to be defeated and, as they keep exchanging words, Jellal begins to cast Abyss Break, a spell that can destroy the tower. Before he can launch the spell though, he feels the aftershock of the wound dealt by Erza, and his Magic fails. This gives Natsu an opening, and, covered in a draconic aura, Natsu punches Jellal into the Tower, destroying much of it, which simultaneously leaves it unable to contain the 2.7 billion Edeas of Magic Power stored within.[72]
Unable to contain the Magic Power, the Tower of Heaven vanishes into thin air. On the beach, after Erza is rescued by Natsu, Erza looks out at the sea and hears Jellal's voice, which says that she has become strong.[73][74] Erza is surprised and claims it to be impossible; however, a slight smile can be seen on her face. It is revealed that Jellal, freed from the control of Zeref, is most likely the one who saved Erza and Natsu by fusing with the Etherion and guiding its Magic up in the sky.[75] He is later seen floating, unconscious, in a massive river of Lacrima, which appear to be the remains of Tower of Heaven after the explosion, and his presumed sacrifice to save Erza and Natsu's lives.[76]
Oración Seis arc
Later, Jellal, now in a comatose state due to absorbing the effects of the Etherion, ends up, through unknown means, in the hands of the Dark Guild and one-third of the Balam Alliance, the Oración Seis, whose leader, Brain, is an old acquaintance of his. Jellal is first seen again in a cross-shaped coffin, wrapped up in chains, as Brain makes Racer bring him to Wendy Marvell. Wendy mistakes Jellal for his Edolas counterpart, Mystogan, who once saved her life.[77][78]
Because of this — and having witnessed Brain wound Jellal's unconscious body — Wendy submits to Brain's thought of restoring Jellal, as Brain believes Jellal can lead the Oración Seis to the Magic they're after: Nirvana. Having been given five minutes to think it over, Wendy decides to do so, and Natsu arrives just in time to see Jellal restored and fully awakened.[79][80] As soon as he sees Jellal, Natsu goes on the offensive, but is easily, and instantaneously, blown away by one of Jellal's spells. When Brain compliments Jellal on his power, Jellal turns around and causes the ground underneath Brain to collapse, sending him plummeting to the lower levels of the Oración Seis' base, before walking away.[81] Now in the forest, having moved away from the Oración Seis' hideout, and having taken some clothes from a defeated Naked Mummy member, Jellal mutters Erza's name.[11]
He is later stalked by Cobra, who has been given orders by Brain to follow him, as he might be heading for Nirvana. Cobra ends up at a large tree, and when Jellal touches it, it causes a large pillar of black light to appear and a large tower to sprout from the ground; this being Nirvana's true form.[82][83] Later, Erza manages to reach Jellal's position, and it is revealed that, due to the effects of Etherion, Jellal now suffers from amnesia; the only thing he outright remembers is Erza's name, and he pleads with her to tell him who that person is.[84][85] Erza tells Jellal that she is Erza, and proceeds to explain who he is, and what he had done to his comrades. Angered, Erza declares that if Jellal can't remember such horrific deeds, then she'll strike her sword into his heart in an effort to force him to, causing Jellal to break down in tears, disgusted by the kind of person he is.[86][87]
Suddenly, Cobra appears, demanding to know how Jellal came to know about Nirvana. Jellal replies that he only activated Nirvana in order to destroy it, stating that such dangerous Magic can not fall into the hands of anyone, revealing that he cast a Self-Destruction Spell on the great Magic. Ignoring Cobra's cries of shock, Jellal tells Erza that he'll take away her possible hatred towards him by ending his life, revealing to have also put said Self-Destruction Spell on himself to free Erza from the pain he has caused her and her comrades.[88]
Just then, Brain appears, and, having been informed of the situation by Cobra, calmly tells Jellal that it was he who invented the Self-Destruction Spell and taught it to him, subsequently nullifying the large spell without the need for the cancellation code. He mocks Jellal and unleashes Nirvana in all of its power, revealing its true form of a gargantuan, eight-legged, walking city.[89]
Jellal and Erza manage to grab onto one of Nirvana's legs and stand on it. There, Erza persuades Jellal to nullify the Self-Destruction spell and to live, despite Jellal saying that he failed to destroy Nirvana and that everything is over. She points at the remaining members of the Allied Forces, who are struggling to reach the top of the moving Nirvana, and claims that everything is not over, encouraging, with a smile on her face, Jellal to live on.[90] Jellal smiles in return, taking Erza's hand as the two prepare to climb up one of Nirvana's gigantic stone legs.[91]
On Nirvana, Midnight appears before the two; Jellal battles Midnight first, however, he is easily defeated, as the Self-Destruction spell he had cast prior leaves him severely drained. Midnight then proceeds to mock him, before preparing to fight Erza.[92][93][94]
Immobilized, Jellal can only watch Erza and Midnight's battle, in which Erza fails to land a single hit on the Dark Mage.[95][96] When Erza is struck (again), and seemingly defeated, he comments on Midnight's incredible strength and hears about the Oración Seis' first initiative: to annihilate the Nirvit in Cait Shelter, thus preventing the sealing of Nirvana once more.[97] Jellal expresses disgust at their goal, but is fiercely reminded by Midnight that he himself is an evil man. Midnight then holds out his hand to Jellal, inviting him to be a member of the Oración Seis, however, Erza rises and expresses her belief in Jellal's light.[98] Resuming her fight with Midnight, Erza begins to pressure the Dark Mage, gaining the upper hand.[99][100]
As clocks strike midnight, an injured Midnight transforms into a massive dark monster before Jellal and Erza's eyes, subsequently attacking Erza with a powerful blast before stabbing both her and Jellal; Jellal cries out Erza's name, seeing her on the verge of death. However, an unharmed Erza is then seen slashing Midnight before an unharmed Jellal's astonished eyes, revealing the previous events to be a mere visual illusion created by Midnight's Magic, which were unable to affect Erza due to her artificial eye.[101]
Later, Nirvana's blast on Cait Shelter fails due to Christina — manned by the Blue Pegasus and Lamia Scale delegates — attacking one of its legs.[102] Jellal and the others are then informed, by Hibiki Lates, that a way to destroy Nirvana exists: simultaneously destroy the Lacrima in each of Nirvana's now-six legs.[103] Hibiki uses his Archive Magic to communicate with them, inviting them to each choose one of the crystals to destroy, with Jellal being assigned the sixth crystal.[104]
As they prepare to destroy the Lacrima, Erza mentions that Natsu probably chose the first Lacrima intentionally, knowing that Brain's alternate personality, Zero, is most likely waiting there. Hearing Natsu's name, Jellal becomes shocked, and utters the Fire Dragon Slayer's name to himself with a cold, dispassionate look on his face.[105]
Jellal leaves the task of destroying the sixth Lacrima to Wendy, and proceeds to head to the location of the first Lacrima, where Natsu is struggling in his fight against Zero, interrupting the battle by blasting Natsu with fire.[106] Zero, with a pleased look on his face, asks Jellal whether he has regained his memories, to which Jellal nods. However, it turns out that Jellal only remembers Natsu, and that he is their only hope at stopping Zero from destroying Cait Shelter; the fire he attacked Natsu with is his way of helping, as he has remembered that Natsu receives strength upon consuming flames. An enraged Natsu runs up to Jellal and punches him in the face, claiming that he's lying. Annoyed, Zero sends Dark Capriccio flying at the both of them.[107] Jellal, however, steps in front of Natsu and takes all the damage meant for the two of them, subsequently causing him to fall to the ground. Jellal then creates golden flames on his hand and asks Natsu to accept the Flame of Rebuke: the power required to defeat Zero.[108]
Natsu finally accepts Jellal as his ally, taking Jellal's outstretched hand and absorbing the flames, entering Dragon Force upon doing so.[109] Thanks to Jellal's boost, Natsu manages to defeat Zero, smashing him into the Lacrima, destroying it at the very same moment his friends destroy theirs, thus destroying Nirvana itself.[110]
As Nirvana falls to pieces, the two are saved by Hoteye, who uses his Liquid Ground to carry them to the safety of the forest, where, it so happens, the other Mages who destroyed the Lacrima reside.[111] Jellal turns down a thanks from Erza, and is then seen sitting with her, not far from the rest of the Allied Forces. When asked by Erza what he plans to do next, Jellal admits that he's afraid of regaining his memories. Erza comforts him by saying that she's there for him, stating that, even if they were to start hating each other again, she won't abandon the "him" sitting there with her.[112]
As she's about to say more, the whole group realizes that they have been surrounded by a rune. The glade is then stormed by the 4th Custody Enforcement Unit of the new Magic Council, led by Lahar, who claims to be there to arrest the Oración Seis members and Jellal himself.[113] Jellal is then put under arrest for federal treason, with all of the others protesting his capture. However, an upset Erza then cries out for the others to stop, taking responsibility for the commotion caused as an apology and telling Lahar that he may take Jellal away.[114]
As he leaves, Jellal suddenly remembers Erza's last name, "Scarlet", and bids her farewell, being locked in the containment carriage. Later, Erza tearfully mourns Jellal's loss as she remembers that as children, it was Jellal himself who chose her last name, due to the color of her hair, stating that he chose it as it was something he would never forget.[115]
Tenrou Island arc
Jellal is later seen in one of the Council's prison cells. When Erza is nearly defeated by Azuma on Tenrou Island, he whispers Erza's name to himself, seemingly aware of the transpiring battle.[116] When the Serena, watching his cell, wonders whether Jellal is casting a spell, the other guard, Nadal, replies that using Magic within the prison is impossible, and starts to torture Jellal with his Magic staff. He wonders aloud if Jellal is hungry, and states that he'll only give him food if he begs, otherwise, he'll leave Jellal without food for an entire week. Jellal ignores him, and instead asks Erza not to lose, something which shocks both of the guards. Erza is somehow able to hear Jellal's plea, and this grants her enough strength to stand back on her feet and continue the fight.[117][118] When Erza finally manages to defeat Azuma, Jellal is seen sensing this, and smiles as a result.[119]
Grand Magic Games arc
One year after the disappearance of Tenrou Island and the Team Tenrou, Jellal, while in jail, regains his memories and is saved from his impending execution by Meredy and Ultear. The three fugitive Mages form their own Independent Guild: Crime Sorcière, which is dedicated to driving away the evil in the world caused by Dark Guilds and Zeref. Over the years, the three manage to destroy multiple Dark Guilds.[120]
In the year X791, five days before the start of the Grand Magic Games, Jellal, Ultear and Meredy send an anonymous message to the members of Team Natsu via pigeon, inviting them to go to a suspension bridge in the West Woods. When the group arrives at the other end of the bridge, Ultear uses her Arc of Time to rebuild the bridge, making it possible for the group to cross it. Once the group crosses, the three members of Crime Sorcière reveal themselves, and they have a brief reunion before they ask the Fairy Tail Mages to investigate a strange Magic Power surrounding the Grand Magic Games. In return, Ultear offers to enhance their own Magic Power by using her Arc of Time to evolve their Magical containers, allowing them to tap into their Second Origin.[121]
Whilst Ultear works on the others, Jellal and Erza go off to talk privately, where Jellal confirms that he has regained all his memories. Jellal tells Erza that he's prepared to die if she wants to seek revenge for him killing their friend, Simon. However, Erza refuses, as she thinks he has already atoned through Crime Sorcière. Jellal replies that he thinks death is the only way to truly redeem his sins, and Erza slaps him for thinking so negatively. She then gives him words of encouragement by telling him that being alive is a sign of strength. When Jellal says that she may be right, Erza angrily pulls on his collar and the two fall backwards off the rocks Jellal was sitting on. The two roll down the embankment behind the rocks and land together at the bottom, with Jellal landing on top of her.
While she is under him, Erza tells Jellal that she didn't think she would ever see him again. She then begins to cry and the two kiss. However, Jellal pushes her away and tells her that they can't be together, as he has a fiancée. When Jellal, Ultear, and Meredy take their leave, Erza sees them off.[122]
When he, Ultear, and Meredy sit at their camp later, Meredy asks Jellal why he lied to Erza about having a fiancée. Ultear adds that it would be better for him to be honest with himself rather than continue to punish himself. Shocked, Jellal replies that punishment is the rule of their guild, and that he can't fall in love with people who walk in the light. Ultear and Meredy then both tease him about his poor skill in lying.[123]
Much to Team Natsu's surprise, Jellal enters the Grand Magic Games as a representative of Fairy Tail; disguised as Mystogan[124] — with Makarov's permission — Jellal becomes a member of Team Fairy Tail B, all in order to get closer to the grounds.[2]
When the town suddenly appears in the Hidden event, Jellal states that it would take a powerful type of Magic to create such a thing.[125]
As the First Day's battles begin to draw to an end, Jellal is chosen by fans to battle against Lamia Scale's Jura Neekis. When they meet in the center of the Domus Flau, Jura says that he won't hold back just because "Mystogan" is a Fairy Tail member, to which Jellal replies that he won't hold back either, happy that he has a chance to fight on behalf of Fairy Tail.[126]
The battle begins with Jura using his Earth Magic, but Jellal is able to dodge it and fights back using Mystogan's previous techniques, to go with his guise. Eventually though, Jellal starts using his Heavenly Body Magic after he realizes he can't win without it. Eventually, Jellal disregards his undercover mission and prepares to use Sema, a spell that will expose his true identity. Ultear, who is watching from afar, sabotages the battle by, through the extortion of Meredy's Sensory Link, making Meredy eat chili peppers and tickling her, thus wearing Jellal down and giving Jura the victory. Mortified by the result of the battle, Jellal walks back to his teammates in shame, where he is scolded by all (except Mirajane); Jellal exclaims that he doesn't know how to respond to this embarrassment.[127] After the First Day's events, Jellal stands outside the bar that Fairy Tail is celebrating in.
During the Second Day's events, Jellal stays relatively silent only piping up to acknowledge Laxus' warning about angering Mirajane.[128] He remains silent for the rest of the day, wondering why he hasn't sensed the suspicious Magic he felt during previous the Games, even after the Second Day's battles have ended.[129] After the Second Day of the Grand Magic Games ends, Jellal and Erza meet under a bridge in Crocus. The two talk about the absence of the strange Magic Power that's been felt every year. Jellal decides to inspect the organizers and starts to leave, and Erza tells him not to overdo it. The two smile, and Jellal departs, glad that Erza and he can finally have a normal conversation.[130]
On the Third Day of the Grand Magic Games, Jellal is replaced, in the Team Fairy Tail B lineup, by Cana Alberona, as the Third Day's guest judge is Lahar of the Magic Council, and watches Erza, from afar, as she competes in Pandemonium.[131] Just as the final battle of Third Day is beginning, Jellal, while walking through the streets of Crocus, suddenly detects the Magic Power Crime Sorcière has felt every year. Calling for Ultear and Meredy to stay put, Jellal runs straight for the source.[132]
Shortly thereafter, Jellal returns to the stadium, coincidentally, right in the middle of Chelia Blendy and Wendy's fight, where he witnesses Chelia gain the upper hand, and begins scouring the crowd for the source of the foul Magic Power. As he passes from person to person, he accidentally bumps into Doranbolt, who seems confused at his presence. Jellal then glances downward, into the Domus Flau, and wonders if Chelia is the source of the Magic Power he is feeling, concluding that Wendy is in grave danger.[133]
As Jellal watches the two girls fight, he wonders if he should intervene.[134] He watches as Wendy decides to keep fighting and is shocked when Chelia uses one of her strongest spells.[135] He finally decides that he shouldn't intervene and sits down, watching the rest of the match unfold.[136] However, Jellal is worried, as he is being eyed by Doranbolt, and is afraid of the complications that a member of the Magic Council may bring to the situation. When he realizes that the Magic Power hasn't vanished, even after Chelia stopped fighting, Jellal senses that the source is heading towards the stadium's exit, and uses his Magic to chase after the person in question. Finding the source of the Magic power, Jellal reaches out to grab the person, only for Doranbolt to block his path. Jellal argues with himself about whether he should knock Doranbolt out, but he then thinks of himself as a Fairy Tail Mage and finds it wrong to fight the Magic Council. Before he can do anything, Lahar finds them together just as Doranbolt accuses Jellal of not being Mystogan, much to his and Lahar's surprise.[137]
Jellal tries to escape his cornering by claiming to be in a hurry and stepping around Doranbolt, but the Council Mage refuses to let him leave, once again asking for confirmation of Jellal's identity. As Jellal states that he is none other than Mystogan, Doranbolt lashes out and rips Jellal's cap and mask off, revealing his face to everyone. The Rune Knight members are shocked, but before anyone can react, Yajima appears, calling Jellal Mystogan and sneakily weaving a story to explain to the Rune Knights that "Mystogan" is not Jellal, but a member of Fairy Tail.[138] After Jellal plays along with the ruse, the Council men apologize and let him continue on his way, though Lahar whispers to Doranbolt that he knows the true Jellal is before them. As he leaves, Jellal telepathically thanks Yajima, who merely replies that Jellal shouldn't get Makarov into further trouble. Though Jellal continues to follow the path towards the mysterious person, because of Doranbolt's intervention, the person escapes.[139]
Later in the day, Jellal makes his way to Ryuzetsu Land arriving after the rest of the Fairy Tail members and the other competing teams. When Erza sees him, she asks what he's doing there, to which Jellal replies he was chasing the source of the Magic Power, however, Erza berates Jellal for his poor disguise: Mystogan's mask and cap, and a pair of swim trunks.[140] The two begin to talk, though in the midst of their conversation, Ichiya, who is running dangerously beside the pool, trips over and flies in their direction. In a split second attempt to stop Ichiya from hitting Erza, Jellal forces the two of them down into the water, and though Erza is saved, she becomes embarrassed to see that he grabbed her chest in the process, much to his embarrassment, prompting him to repeatedly apologize to her, though she bashfully states that it's fine.[141] When Lyon and Gray later fight and freeze the pool, Natsu uses his Magic to melt the ice, causing a large explosion. Erza and Jellal are both sent flying, and she lands atop him in the ruins of the resort.
Jellal keeps away from his team on the Fourth Day as well, hidden in the crowd. After the day's event, Naval Battle, is concluded, Jellal watches as the battle portions of the day are set to start.[142] During Natsu and Gajeel's match against the Twin Dragons of Sabertooth, Jellal is shocked to see Rogue and Sting enter Dragon Force of their own free will.[143] Upon looking back on Natsu's uses of Dragon Force, Jellal makes note that on both occasions, Natsu had some form of assistance: the first through eating Etherion, and the second from consuming the Flame of Rebuke. Thinking this over, Jellal is further surprised that both Sting and Rogue are able to enter the state of their own accord.[144] Whilst the fight pans out below, Jellal continues to walk around the arena, monitoring the crowd and participants. Suddenly, he once again picks up the presence of the Dark Magic Power coming from somewhere within the arena. As he runs to find the person, Ultear and Meredy telepathically tell him not to let the person escape again, with him curtly replying that he knows.[145]
Jellal locates and follows the hooded figure from the Domus Flau, wondering the entire time who they could possibly be.[146] After trailing the person through town, Jellal finally approaches them in an empty street, removing his cap and mask to reveal his face, asking the mysterious person to do the same. The figure freezes and doesn't respond, and Jellal notes that the person appears to be female. The hooded figure then turns, showing her face to Jellal, who can do nothing but splutter a firm denial as he stares at the mysterious person in absolute shock and horror.[147] After talking with the mysterious woman, the two part ways and Jellal regroups with Meredy and Ultear. As he relates to them what he knows, the two declare their disbelief. Jellal continues to state that there has been a huge misunderstanding, and that they are all locked in a destiny that they cannot avoid.[148]
On the Fifth and final Day of the Grand Magic Games, Jellal sits with Ultear and Meredy, listening to the two as they question what Future Lucy said and wonder if they should evacuate the citizens after learning what she told them. Jellal, however, interrupts them, stating that they shouldn't get ahead of themselves, as he is not sure whether he completely believes what Future Lucy told him. When asked, he states that something seems off.[149] A while later, Jellal stares out over Crocus as Kagura and Erza fight, a sad expression etched onto his face.[150]
Later, as Ultear comments that they don't know whether what Jellal heard was true, Jellal thinks about the Dragons, the Magic and the Eclipse, and states that something doesn't feel right and that either what he was told was not true, or the Lucy he spoke to was a fake.[151] Suddenly, Jellal, Ultear, and Meredy all sense the same Dark Magic. As Ultear notes that it's coming from the town, Jellal tells them to stay calm, stating that if Future Lucy is with Natsu, then there is no need to worry.[152] Whilst the Games continue below in Crocus, Jellal sits, pondering the current predicament.[153]
Suddenly, Jellal seems to finally piece together and realize all of his doubts about the Lucy from the future, and why he seems to be so unsure of her. When asked by Meredy and Ultear, Jellal recalls how in previous years the malicious Magic Power came straight from the Eclipse Gate, and how this year the source seemed to move, as it attached itself to anyone who used the Gate. Continuing, Jellal notes how Lucy stated she arrived in Crocus on the fourth of July, but remembers the day he almost got caught by Doranbolt chasing after a person, this having occurred on the third of July. Looking at these points from a different angle, Jellal realizes that Lucy was not in fact lying about her arrival time, rather, the person he was chasing on the third of July was another person entirely, who had also used the Eclipse Gate to travel back from the future.[154] The idea of a second future visitor now clear, Jellal rushes his guild towards Mercurius, desperate to discover the purpose the other person has for returning to the past.[155] As the guild runs through the streets of Crocus, Jellal questions what the individual could be after, and, moreover, whose side they are on.[156]
As Lahar and Doranbolt discuss contacting the Magic Council about Eclipse, Jellal suddenly appears from behind them, seeking their aid.[157] After finishing his business with Doranbolt and Lahar, Jellal moves about the city helping to defend it from the Dragon's attacks. Along the way, he spots Erza being surrounded by a group of Motherglare's minions, and, seeing Erza fall due to her previous injuries from her fight with Minerva, quickly rushes to her aid, destroying the beasts around her. Asking Erza if she needs a hand, he reaches down to help her up, though as he does, Millianna appears before the duo, spotting him and becoming wrought with rage.[158]
Approaching the duo, Millianna is interrupted by Erza, who shakily stands and tells her that she has already forgiven Jellal for all that he has done. As Jellal stares on sadly, Millianna screams out all of his sins and vows to kill him, though Erza replies that doing that will gain her nothing. Before anyone in the group can speak, they are approached by Ultear, who, despite Jellal's protests, confesses to have been the one controlling Jellal all along, hence being the one responsible for the Tower of Heaven and Simon's death. Seeing Ultear act in such a way, Jellal asks his guild mate if something is wrong, though Ultear brushes off his question and tells them all to stop standing around wasting time. As the Time Mage walks off, Jellal looks to the sky, openly questioning what's wrong with the twisted world they live in.[159]
Soon after, Erza is unable to walk due to her injuries from battle, so Jellal helps her up and attempts to walk away with her.[160] As they walk through Crocus, the two realize that the Eclipse Gate at Mercurius has been destroyed, subsequently returning the Dragons and those from the future to their proper time. Aware that they have both survived defending Crocus from the attack, the two smile at each other.[161]
In the aftermath of the Dragon attack, Jellal walks with Meredy through the wrecked city, the two both searching for Ultear and marvelling at the fact that though the future visitors have left they still have intact memories of the events that unfolded. As Jellal worries that the royal family's use of black Magic may cause an uproar if the Council finds out, the two are approached by Doranbolt, who asks to speak to them privately.[162] Moving away from prying ears, Doranbolt reveals that he has wiped clean the memories of the Council members, replacing them with fake ones for the night of July 7th. When Jellal questions why he would go so far, Doranbolt replies that sometimes the best course of action is to turn a blind eye. Demanding the two keep quiet themselves, Doranbolt moves to leave, though not before Jellal asks what became of Cobra. Revealing that Cobra has been taken back to prison, Doranbolt continues to state that the Poison Dragon Slayer said some puzzling things about the "gates to the netherworld" opening.[163]
Contemplating what Cobra said as he and Meredy continue their search, Jellal wonders if Tartarus, the final corner of the Balam Alliance, is on the move. Before they can speak further, both he and Meredy are suddenly approached by an old woman, who somehow knows them by name and offers them a letter from Ultear. Reading, the two realize that the letter contains Ultear's final farewell to them, the Time Mage writing that she incorrectly cast a spell during the Dragon fight and as such has barely any time to live. Wishing them all the best for their future, reminding them of Crime Sorcière's main values and hoping for them to catch Zeref, Ultear signs off. Finishing, Meredy begins to cry whilst Jellal turns to question where the old lady got the letter, only to find she has vanished.[164] Saddened by the loss of his close friend and guild mate, Jellal turns to comfort Meredy, holding her as she sobs.[165]
Tartarus arc
,At the request of Doranbolt, Jellal and Meredy meet up with the Oración Seis after the Council worker releases them from prison. Promising to take care of everything, Jellal begins a job set for him by Doranbolt.[166] Staring down the Oración Seis and seeing them prepare to attack, Jellal tells Meredy to stand back, convincing her that he is more than enough to handle the Mages. When Midnight asks if Jellal was sent by Doranbolt to return them to prison, Jellal reminds them that he himself is a prison-break, and therefore finds that whole idea amusing. Vowing to fight for their freedom, the Oración Seis -minus Hoteye, who states he no longer wishes to fight- approach Jellal, with Racer rushing in first to try and catch the man off guard from behind. However, Jellal manages to dodge his subsequent punches and kicks, calling Racer by his real name: Sawyer. As Racer yells for him not to call him as such, Cobra tries to punch Jellal from his other side, only for Jellal to grab his wrist and send him flying into Racer, all the while using Cobra's true name, Erik, as well. Seeing her guild mates fall, Angel moves forward to attack too, sending a flurry of sharp-toothed creatures swarming at Jellal. As the little monsters move to surround him, Jellal asks Sorano if she has picked up a new Magic, before he uses his own to completely obliterate the creatures around him. The Oración Seis on the defensive, Midnight suddenly steps forward, promising to have more fun with Jellal than he did seven years ago. [167]
When the Oración Seis charges once more, Jellal takes some harsh blows trying to defend against them all at the same time, glaring up at the group as they state they are finally warmed up.[168] Struggling to take on all of the members of the Oración Seis when they work together, Jellal tells Meredy to stand back when she asks to assist, telling her the task is something he must do himself. Continuing, Jellal listens as Midnight states that they are fighting at their best because they have recently become free, the man's words prompting him to angrily surge forward and punch Racer harshly in the face, screaming that he shall set them free, as their current "freedom" is a lie. Rounding out to hit Cobra as the guild stand shocked into silence, Jellal continues that they will never be truly free if they remained consumed by darkness, the man and his enemies so caught up that they all fail to notice Brain - recently attacked by his own guild and assumed down - awaken as Zero.[169]
Midnight then questions Jellal, wondering what he can possibly do to free them. Jellal replies that he will defeat all of them, telling them to disappear just as the rest of the Oración Seis watch in awe. However, at that moment, Zero gets up, claiming that Jellal is the one who is going to disappear and attacks him with Dark Capriccio. Having no time to react, Jellal is hit by the spell, falling down with a hole in his chest. Meredy rushes to his side in spite of him telling her to run, but before she can reach him, Zero hits Jellal with yet another destructive attack, crushing the ground around him. While Zero expresses his joy, Meredy watches, shocked and teary-eyed.[170] However, as Zero laughs at his seeming victory, he suddenly smashes like a mirror, revealing a perfectly intact Jellal behind him as Midnight stands shocked that Jellal managed to see through his illusion. When Jellal looks up, the Oración Seis see that he has purposely maimed his eyes to see through Midnight's Magic: not only has he broken free of the spell, but he has also prepared to cast Grand Chariot. With his eyes still closed, Jellal finishes casting the spell, downing Angel, Cobra, Racer and Midnight. Before they can move to respond, the blunette slips into a stance, moving to cast Sema, which hits the group and completely defeats them. Relaxing after his victory, Jellal hears Midnight accepting defeat and asking to be killed, though he responds by saying he wishes to hurt them no further. When Angel asks if he will return them to prison, he shocks the group by stating that he would like them to join Crime Sorcière and help him find and kill Zeref.[171] After Tartarus is dealt with, Jellal along with the new members of Crime Sorcière, cross paths with Erza who has begun to doubt herself. Jellal tells her she will be okay and that she should continue on her path of light and they will walk the path of darkness. He says their paths will cross again one day and by then, he hopes she will shine bright enough to erase their existence. With his last words before walking away, he tells Erza to move forward. [172]
Magic and Abilities
Heavenly Body Magic (天体魔法 Tentai Mahō): It is a powerful Magic based around astronomical objects, such as meteors, stars and black holes. Jellal generates and manipulates the energy of stars from his body and uses it against his enemy. Jellal has shown tremendous mastery over this particular form of Magic.[173]
- Meteor (流星, ミーティア, Mītia): Jellal's body is surrounded by a cloak of Heavenly Body Magic, allowing him to move through the air at incredible speeds. Even if someone could detect his trajectory, it is nearly impossible to catch him. With his speed, Jellal assaults his opponents with quick, but powerful, melee attacks. Jellal wears a special suit under his robes to better utilize this particular spell.[174] During Jellal's battle with Jura Neekis, the speed granted to him by Meteor amazed even Jet, a Mage specializing in speed-enhancing Magic.[175]
- Grand Chariot (七星剣, グランシャリオ, Guran Shario): While in the air, Jellal places both arms on top of each other, with the top hand having only the index and middle fingers spread out. Seven Magic Seals are then summoned in front of him and connect, creating a constellation of sorts. Each Magic Seal then releases a powerful light blast down on the opponent, forming the same pattern on the ground before exploding. According to Jellal, this spell's destruction capability rivals that of an actual meteor.[176]
- Altairis (暗黒の楽園, アルテアリス, Arutearisu): Jellal crosses his arms above his head to begin casting the spell.[177] As he prepares to fire the spell, all nearby shadows are drawn towards him, forming a small black orb which rapidly grows in size (inside are small white lights, giving it an appearance similar to that of the night sky), before unleashing it towards the target. The orb appears to be incredibly dense, and may hold a tremendous amount of gravity capable of crushing everything in Jellal's path. This spell was used when Simon saved Erza.[178]
- True Heavenly Body Magic: Sema (真・天体魔法 星崩し Shin Tentai Mahō Sēma): An attack in which Jellal bows down and points his hands downwards, with all the fingers closed except the index and middle fingers. He then begins to slowly move his right hand until it points upwards, causing the clouds above Jellal to begin circling, creating what appears to be a cyclone.[179] From the center of the swirling formation, a glowing orb begins to form, growing in size until a humongous meteor emerges, falling quickly to earth towards the intended target. When the meteor hits, the force is strong enough to create a large explosion, which engulfs a wide area and releases a strong hurricane of air, also leaving a large crater in its wake. This spell was used to defeat the 4 members of Oracion Seis.[180]
- Heavenly Beams: A spell in which Jellal releases several powerful beams from his hands towards his opponent, causing great damage.[181] (Unnamed)
- Heavenly Blast: A spell in which Jellal closes his fist, except for two fingers and swipes them backwards; a large sphere of Heavenly Body Magic appears and rushes towards his target.[182] (Unnamed)
- Heaven Palm: A spell in which Jellal grabs his arm with his other hand, and straightens his palm; a ball of Heavenly Magic appears in his palm, which then is shot at the target, pushing them away as if it were an invisible wall.[183] (Unnamed)
- Heaven Breakdown: A spell in which Jellal swipes his hand, causing the ground in front of him to break, making everything on top of it fall.[184] (Unnamed)
- Heavenly Arrows: A spell in which Jellal swipes his hands, releasing several arrows of light towards his target.[185] (Unnamed)
Thought Projection (思念体 Shinentai): Jellal is capable of creating a Thought Projection of himself, and is very skilled at doing so, having been able to fool the Magic Council into believing that his projection was actually a separate being from him, and managing to grant it membership to both the Magic Council and the Ten Wizard Saints. His projection is also able to don an attire different from Jellal's own.[186]
Darkness Magic (闇の魔法 Yami no Mahō): Jellal, due to his "possession" at the hands of "Zeref", is an expert in the usage of Darkness Magic. He was shown using almost exclusively this form of Magic for all of his fight with Erza, in which he proved himself capable of creating the ghostly entities characteristic of this form of Magic, using them to both hit and immobilize the woman with great skill.[181] In addition, as a child, he could employ Darkness Magic in other, more unusual ways.
- Dark Grab: Jellal moves his hands towards the opponent, far away from him. This will prompt a pair of strong, dark-colored arms to appear from a nearby surface and grab the opponent, immobilizing or choking them according to the movements performed by Jellal himself, who, after grabbing the target, is capable of controlling the spell with a single hand.[187] In the anime, the spell instead takes the form of a large amount of red glyphs, which surround the opponent, swirling around them and then grabbing them. Such glyphs can also be used to lift the target in the air and bring them to Jellal.[188] (Unnamed)
- Darkness Cage: Jellal creates a sphere of Darkness Magic in his hand, before firing it at his target, releasing several ghosts that wrap around the them, restraining their movement.[189] In the anime, Jellal instead crushes a different-looking sphere in his hand, summoning several small masses of Darkness Magic which then grow and come together to create a sphere around the target, restraining their movement and dealing pain.[190] (Unnamed)
- Dark Vanish: A spell in which the target seemingly implodes from the inside, or is, in any case, forced to vanish through unknown means, leaving only the clothes behind.[188] (Unnamed)
- Dark Mass: Jellal creates a dark sphere that expands until it transitions into multiple tentacle-like entities that rush towards the target, and upon contact, spontaneously erupts. Within, the dark sphere appears to feature the face of Ksitigarbha.[190] (Unnamed)
- Ghost Fireworks: Jellal extends his arm and releases a flurry of ghosts towards his opponents. They seem to be alive as when Erza Scarlet cut them, they shed blood.[191] (Unnamed)
Fire Magic (火の魔法 Hi no Mahō): Jellal is able to use Fire Magic, a form of Magic which, as the name implies, allows the user to generate, manipulate and control fire. His mastery over this magic is enough for him to cast Abyss Break on his own.[192]
- Flame of Rebuke (咎の炎 Toga no Honō): This spell, when released, creates golden flames in Jellal's palm, which he gave to Natsu to consume in order to defeat Zero. By eating them, Natsu entered Dragon Force, describing the feeling of consuming the flames as being similar to "eating Etherion", implying the spell to be incredibly powerful.[193][194] According to Jellal, creating these flames uses up virtually all of his Magic.[195]
Earth Magic (土魔法 Tsuchi Mahō): Jellal is able to use Earth Magic, a form of Magic which, as the name implies, allows the user to generate, manipulate and control earth. His mastery over this magic is enough for him to cast Abyss Break on his own.[196]
Water Magic (水系各種魔法 Mizu Kei Kakushu Mahō): Jellal is able to use Water Magic, a form of Magic which, as the name implies, allows the user to generate, manipulate and control water. His mastery over this magic is enough for him to cast Abyss Break on his own.[197]
Wind Magic (風魔法 Kaze Mahō): Jellal is able to use Wind Magic, a form of Magic which, as the name implies, allows the user to generate, manipulate and control wind. His mastery over this magic is enough for him to cast Abyss Break on his own.[198]
Abyss Break (煉獄砕破 アビスブレイク Abisu Bureiku): An extremely powerful spell which employs four different types of elemental Magic (Fire Magic, Earth Magic, Water Magic and Wind Magic) to attack the opponent.[199]
Bind Snake (拘束の蛇 Kōsoku no Hebi): This spell appears in the form of a snake tattoo. The snake winds its way around the target's body, tightening and restricting movement. Jellal used this on Erza to immobilize her for the sacrifice ceremony to revive Zeref.[200]
Self-Destruction Spell (自律崩壊魔法陣 Jiritsu Hōkai Mahōjin): An extremely complex spell which Jellal used in an attempt to destroy Nirvana and commit suicide. Without knowledge of its cancellation code, it cannot be dispelled. However, the spell's creator and the one who taught it to Jellal, Brain, was able to dispel this Magic without any need for the code.[201][202]
Telekinesis: Jellal has shown the ability to move objects around in the air without touching them, being capable of doing so even through his Thought Projection Siegrain, making a book he was reading float back to its place on the bookshelf.[203] Offensively, Jellal has proven himself capable of moving a target around in any desired manner. By moving his hand in the direction he wants it to move, he blows the target away as if he were hitting them. This will seemingly produce an invisible, powerful blunt attack to strike the target; an attack which is strong enough to kill opponents, causing their blood to spill out.[204]
Telepathy (念話 Terepashī): Jellal has shown the ability to be able to communicate telepathically with others, disallowing any "jacking" of his communication to occur.[205][206]
Magic Staves: While disguised as Mystogan, Jellal is shown to be able to use the same Magic as his Edolas counterpart.
- Five Layered Magic Circle: Sacred Song (五重魔法陣 御神楽, Gojūmahōjin: Mikagura): Jellal creates several Magic circles covered in runes above his opponent, which release a concentrated beam of Magic Power that damages the enemy.[207]
- Three Layered Magic Circle: Mirror Water (三重魔法陣 鏡水, Sanjūmahōjin: Kyōsui): Jellal uses several Magic staves to cast a Magic circle that can reflect spells back at their caster.[208]
Expert Hand to Hand Combatant: Jellal, despite favoring the use of his ranged Magic, has shown himself to be a capable unarmed combatant: while his speed was enhanced by his Meteor spell, Jellal went on to attack and brutally injure Natsu Dragneel several times with strong melee attacks, such as punches and kicks.[209]
Expert Swordsmanship Specialist: Despite having scarcely been shown employing one, Jellal, much like his childhood friend Erza Scarlet, has proven himself able to wield a sword with impressive proficiency since his younger years: during his time as a slave in the Tower of Heaven, he was shown to be capable of reaching the cell Erza was being kept prisoner in by himself, having dispatched all of the guards there with a massive sword he had taken from one of them.[210]
Immense Magic Power: Jellal has been shown to possess a vast amount of Magic Power, enough for him to be made a member of the Ten Wizard Saints, a group containing some of the strongest Mages in Earth Land,[211] as well as a member of the Magic Council, the ruling body of the Magic world; the latter in spite of both his young age and his overbearingness towards older, fellow councilors.[212] Such feats were made more notable by the fact that the one receiving such titles wasn't actually him, but rather the persona he had created with his Thought Projection, Siegrain, which required a considerable amount of Jellal's own Magic Power to be kept active.[213]
Immense Durability: Jellal is a highly resilient opponent, who has proven himself capable of undergoing large amounts of damage without collapsing: during the events of the Tower of Heaven, he could continue fighting after being slashed by Erza Scarlet[214] (despite such action having later stopped him from casting Abyss Break),[215] and receiving a barrage of Fire Dragon Slayer Magic spells from Natsu Dragneel, emerging unscathed from them;[216] later on, most importantly, he was able to survive Natsu's attacks after the latter had entered Dragon Force,[217] even after being sent crashing down through his own Tower of Heaven.[218] He was also able to fuse his body with the Etherion and attain control of it, something which should have resulted in his certain death.[219] He, however, yet again survived, entering a comatose state,[77] from which he was awoken via Wendy Marvell's Sky Dragon Slayer Magic.[220]
Immense Agility: Aside from his Magic capabilities, Jellal is fast, agile, and has quick reflexes, being shown avoiding and redirecting the slashes from Erza's large bladed weapons with ease, reacting to them with his own Magic.[221] He was also shown evading the assaults from Jura Neekis' stone pillars through several remarkable acrobatic leaps.[222] Jellal went as far as to flawlessly dodge the attacks of Racer, a Dark Mage known for his masterful skill in employing speed-enhancing Magic (or rather Magic which slows his opponents' perception of him), without resorting to employ his own spells; aside from ducking even with his back turned, Jellal was also able to subsequently pinpoint Racer's location and throw another member of his guild (namely Cobra) against him.[223]
Enhanced Strength: Jellal has displayed considerable physical strength, enough for him to send a man of Cobra's stature flying several meters away from him using only a single hand; what's more, the feat was performed with a backward motion, and Cobra himself was sent crashing against Racer, causing him to stagger in the process.[224]
Enhanced Endurance: Jellal's vast array of spells comes with the stamina to employ them in subsequent reprises, with him being resilient enough to use Flame of Rebuke,[225] a spell powerful enough to allow Natsu Dragneel to enter Dragon Force,[226] replicating the effects of Etherion, the ultimate weapon of the Magic Council,[194] after attempting to cast a Self-Destruction Spell on both Nirvana and himself,[227] something which greatly weakened him.[94]
Keen Intellect: Jellal is a smart, cunning and resourceful individual who displayed particular skill in deception, having been capable of fooling both Erza Scarlet and the entirety of the Magic Council, even managing to become a member himself. He has shown himself capable of creating clever schemes and planning ahead, being the schemer of the plan to revive Zeref, whom he believed dead, and tricking the Council into unintentionally working for him.[228] Jellal's natural cleverness comes with a vast knowledge and deep understanding of the Magic world, with him being aware of powerful spells such as Unison Raid,[229] and, thanks to his time in the Council, possessing thorough information about the ancient Magic Nirvana, even knowing where it was hidden and how to unseal it.[230]

Main article: Erza Scarlet Jellal and Erza have been friends for a quite a long while; they first met in the Tower of Heaven, back when it was being constructed. During this time, Jellal gave Erza her last name, which is something she's held dear to her since.[231] Jellal cared deeply for her, to the point of changing places with her when she was about to admit to a crime that she didn't commit.[232] However, when Erza went to save him from the guards who captured him, he, having been brainwashed already, attacked her and exiled her from the Tower of Heaven, making everyone think she betrayed them.[233][234] Eight years later, Jellal tries to sacrifice her to "revive" Zeref and claimed that, as he forcefully pushed her towards the Lacrima meant for her sacrifice, he once loved her. However, he was stopped by Natsu.[235][236] After his defeat, Erza hears his voice saying she had become strong, and a slight smile could be seen on her face.[237] Though later, Erza told Lucy that what she thought that Jellal was partially responsible for stopping the tower from destroying both her and Natsu, since, at the moment he was defeated by Natsu, he was freed from the spirit of Zeref and returned to his old, kind self, fusing with Etherion in Erza's place, guiding the Magic up and into the sky.[238] Later, during the conflict with the Oración Seis, he is revived by Wendy,[239] and the only thing he can remember is Erza's name.[240] Upon hearing all the evil deeds he committed and the pain he caused Erza, Jellal chose to cast a Self-Destruction Spell on his body to rid Erza of all the pain and sadness he's caused her.[241] However, Erza managed to convince him to live to atone for his sins. Afterward, he chooses to fight together with her. After defeating Nirvana, Jellal and Erza talk in private, where Jellal confesses his fear of his inner darkness resurfacing, but Erza says that even if that happens, she will be there for him.[242] During her fight with Azuma, she heard Jellal's voice telling her to not give up, helping give her the strength to stand up and, eventually, defeat Azuma.[243]When Erza and Jellal meet in X791, after the reappearance of Tenrou Island and the Team Tenrou, they talk about Jellal having regained his memories and about the horrible things he did during his days as a possessed Mage,[244] and eventually, while thinking about all the moments they had over the years, they kiss. However, Jellal pushes her away because, though he admitted he's already in love with her and, while Erza reciprocates these feelings, he still believes that he should punish himself for his past actions, and doesn't believe he deserves to be with someone who "walks in the light". Erza, however, is nonetheless happy that things happened the way they did.[245] After the Second Day of the Grand Magic Games, after Jellal spoke privately with Erza and the two smiled at each other and left, Jellal expressed his happiness at how he and Erza were finally able to have a normal conversation, silently thanking her as he walked away.[246] Main article: Natsu Dragneel At first, Natsu Dragneel seemed to hold great hatred towards Jellal Fernandes for trying to use Erza Scarlet as a sacrifice to resurrect the Black Wizard: Zeref.[247] Natsu also disapproved of the way Jellal treated his comrades, as seen when Jellal badmouthed Simon for his death, calling it foolish and useless, prompting Natsu to attack Jellal for saying such things[248][249] During the time Jellal was comatose (because of Etherion),[250] Natsu continued holding his grudge towards the former Wizard Saint, which is something rare for him; following Jellal's awakening, Natsu attacked him on sight.[251] When Jellal tried to aid Natsu in his fight against Zero, Natsu initially refused to utilize any help from Jellal and instead attacked him,[252] but once Jellal defended him from Zero's attack, in a similar manner to Simon, he soon stretched out his hand and accepted Jellal's help.[253] When Jellal was about to be taken under arrest,[254] Natsu was the first one who spoke out against it, as well as the first who tried to force his way through the Magic Council's soldiers, calling Jellal an ally of his group, and stating that they were taking him back with them.[255] Main article: Wendy Marvell Due to Jellal and Mystogan sharing the same face, upon first seeing Jellal, Wendy confuses the two and believes that Jellal is the person who saved her life when she was a child.[256] After reviving Jellal to repay the debt she believes she owes him, she is saddened to find out that Jellal has lost his memories, as she thinks he has forgotten about her after all the years that have passed.[257] After Jellal regains some of his memories but is still unable to remember her, Wendy expresses her sadness. However, though Jellal didn't know he never met her, he has a strong amount of faith in her, such as giving her the confidence to destroy the sixth Lacrima, stating that she had the strength to destroy it; his kind encouragement would eventually give her the strength to do just that. He was very determined to protect her guild and destroy Nirvana, stating that's all that mattered to him at the time. When he is arrested, Jellal deeply apologizes to Wendy about being unable to remember her, but expresses happiness at the fact that he may have saved her life.[258] She also fiercely defends Jellal when the Magic Council orders his arrest, trying to make them allow Jellal his freedom for helping the Allied Forces defeat the Oración Seis.[259] When Jellal and Wendy meet once again after her seven years in stasis on Tenrou Island, Wendy has already learned that Jellal and the person she thought he was are separate people, and when Jellal tells her as such, she exclaims that she has figured everything out. Though now realizing that Jellal was not the one she is in-debt to, Wendy was still very happy to see Jellal out of prison and that the man found a meaning in his life.[260] Jellal is also somewhat protective of Wendy, such as during her fight with Chelia, he noted she was in danger and wondered if he should interfere, but was relieved she kept fighting and, eventually, tied.[261] Main article: Makarov Dreyar Makarov is the Guild Master of Fairy Tail and the one who allowed Jellal to participate on behalf of his Edolas counterpart: Mystogan, something that made Jellal greatly honored.[262] When he told Makarov the situation about the Dark Magic he felt every year, Makarov allowed him to fight, despite most of the guild not agreeing with the idea, showing he has a strong amount of trust in Jellal, even boasting to Mavis about how strong he is.[263]
Main article: Ultear Milkovich Ultear is a member of Crime Sorcière and the person who possessed him when he was little to keep Grimore Heart out of the Magic Council's gaze, and is the cause of him having ruined so many people's lives as a result. Her possession of him left Jellal nearly insanse.[264][265][266] However, after she discovered the truth about her mother and how she always loved her, Ultear "turned over a new leaf", so to speak, and made it her duty to save Jellal from the prison in an effort to make amends for ruining his life. After saving him from imprisonment, Ultear, Jellal and Meredy form Crime Sorcière in order to destroy Dark Guilds and Zeref. The two Mages have now become friends[267] and seem to generally care about each other.[268] She was even willing to tell Erza about everything she did to him and was willing to take all the blame for his sake. Ultear is also supported for Jellal to respond to Erza's feelings and to stop punishing himself.[269] During his reunion with Milliana, with the latter determined to kill him over his past crimes, Ultear intervenes on his behalf and reveals the truth about everything, from her controlling him to being responsible for being the true murderer of Simon, leaving Jellal shocked that she would do that for him.[270] Following Ultear's usage of Last Ages, she gave Jellal and Meredy a letter that she has little time left to live and to reminds them of Crime Sorcière's resolve, and wishes for them to continue on strongly into the future, find Zeref, and continue their fight with her spirit at their side. Realizing Ultear sacrificed herself for the future, Jellal mourned her loss while comforting a tearful Meredy.[271] Main article: Meredy Despite not knowing Jellal before breaking him out of prison, Meredy was happy to assist Ultear with the task. Since that time, she and Jellal have been in each others presence quite a bit, being part of the same guild and fighting alongside one another to defeat many enemies. Meredy seems to hold a great deal of respect for Jellal and cares for him a lot, in particular encouraging him to deepen his relationship with Erza so that he can attain happiness.[272] During Jellal's fight with Jura, Meredy is not past using her Magic to impede Jellal to protect his identity, caring more for his safety than his reputation as an apparent Mage of Fairy Tail.[273]
Main article: Millianna Millianna was part of Jellal's group when she was enslaved in the Tower of Heaven. The small group of children started a revolution and the slaves were able to defeat the guards. However, Jellal was possessed by Ultear Milkovich and managed to manipulate Millianna and the others to work for him and complete the tower in order to revive Zeref.[274] After learning the truth and successfully escaping the tower, Millianna, along with Wally and Shô, decided to travel the world.[275] During their travels, the group learned that Jellal had survived the destruction of the tower, prompting Millianna to join Mermaid Heel in order to find him and avenge Simon, whom he had killed.[276] In fact, even after seven years, the mere sight of Jellal prompted Millianna to want to attack him.[277] During the Dragon's raid on Crocus, Jellal would reunite with Millianna for the first time since the Tower of Heaven, to which Millianna immediately glared in anger at him.[278] Millianna then shouted to Erza, who was defending him, over all the crimes he did and swore she would kill him stating she would never forgive him, leaving Jellal sad.[279] However, after Ultear intervened and revealed that she was the one who was controlling Jellal the whole time and how she's responsible for killing Simon, Millianna was then left confused upon this revelation and unable to decide whether she should kill Jellal.[280] Main article: Kagura Mikazuchi Despite Jellal never having met her, Kagura harbors a scathing hatred for Jellal for having killed her brother, Simon, and wishes to kill him with her own hands. It is for that sole reason that she keeps her sword, Archenemy, sealed. The mere sight of Jellal is enough to make Kagura physically sick, and even something as simple as mentioning his name sends her into a rage.[281] Her desire to kill Jellal is obsessive, as she showed immense rage towards Erza for defending him and even mentioning his name, causing her to brutally attack Erza in response. However, upon secretly listening to Ultear's conversation with Millianna about her being the one who was controlling Jellal the whole time and the true murderer over her brother, Kagura seems to have reconsidered taking revenge.[282]
Main article: Yajima Jellal, while still as Siegrain, was a member of the Magic Council and worked together with Yajima. Even when he was possessed, Jellal held genuine respect for Yajima, as he politely referred to him as "Yajima-san", as most of the Council did. When Jellal managed to convince everyone except Yajima to agree to fire Etherion, Yajima expects the former to take responsibility for the consequences that would be caused by the firing of Etherion, and warns Siegrain that the people's lost lives will be upon his hands.[283] However, after Jellal fooled him and everyone else, Yajima was angry. Seven years later, just as Jellal was surrounded by Lahar and Doranbolt with the Rune Knights with them and Jellal's cover was blown, Yajima stepped in and protected him by telling everyone that he is Mystogan, his Edolas counterpart. While this protected Jellal, he would telepathically thank Yajima for protecting him, stating he's indebted to him, while Yajima would sternly tell Jellal he would only do this once and said to leave before he causes Makarov trouble.[284] Main article: Lahar Lahar is a member of the newly reformed Magic Council and, due to Jellal having destroyed the original Magic Council, holds a deep hatred towards him. He showed Jellal no mercy at all even when he returned to being good and was the reason Nirvana and Oración Seis were defeated as a result.[285] Even when Jellal was being taken away he coldly told him he will never see another human again and will be given the death penalty most likely. However, Lahar did at least allow Jellal to say his goodbyes to his comrades before being taken away.[286] Even after seven years, Lahar's hatred towards the fugitive Jellal remains the same, despite Jellal having destroyed several Dark Guilds. When he saw him again after his identity as Mystogan was blown, Lahar was shocked, but before he could do anything, Yajima stepped in and defended Jellal, lying about who he really is. While Lahar apologized to "Mystogan", in truth, Lahar whispers to Doranbolt that he knew Yajima was lying, and that he won't allow the criminal Jellal to get away.[287] Before the Dragon's emerged from the Eclipse Gate, Jellal approached Lahar and Doranbolt, shocking them and asked a favor from them to release Cobra to fight the Dragons. Surprisingly, Lahar agreed due to the circumstances and released Cobra into the fray.[288] Doranbolt noted Lahar may have gone after Jellal following the incident had Doranbolt not erased his memories. Main article: Doranbolt Doranbolt is a member of the Magic Council and Head of a Division of the Rune Knights, a close friend of Lahar and, like Lahar, is an enemy of Jellal. When Jellal was arriving at the tournament to check on the mysterious Dark Magic, he bumped into Doranbolt and the latter was shocked at seeing "Mystogan" and followed him, knowing that Mystogan was not supposed to be in Fairy Tail anymore.[289] After Wendy's fight ended in a draw, Jellal tried to get away to find the evil Magic only for Doranbolt to stop him and demand to know who he is.[290] When he saw his face, he was shocked, however, before they can arrest him, Yajima arrives and defends Jellal, calling him Mystogan. However, while Doranbolt believed Yajima, Lahar whispered to him that he's the real Jellal, shocking Doranbolt. Before the Dragon's emerged from the Eclipse Gate, Jellal approached Lahar and Doranbolt, shocking them and asked a favor from them to release Cobra to fight the Dragons. Surprisingly, Doranbolt and Lahar agreed due to the circumstances and released Cobra into the fray.[291] Following the ordeal, the two talked in private how Doranbolt replaced Lahar's and the councils memories so no one would lose faith in the Magic Council or cause trouble, leaving Jellal surprised. He also made sure Jellal wasn't caught and erased Lahar's memories of what he did, to which Jellal was grateful. Doranbolt told Jellal he owes him and would do this only once, but has shown that he, unlike Lahar, knows of Jellal's atonement and left on friendly terms respecting each other.[292]
Main article: Shô Jellal and Shô have known each other since they were children as they were both enslaved in the Tower of Heaven and both were part of a small group of children lead by Jellal, developing a close relationship during their time together. When Jellal was possessed, making everyone believe Erza betrayed them by blowing up the ships, Shô stayed with Jellal to help finish the tower. He was even willing to explain Jellal's plan to Erza and everyone, believing in Jellal, thinking him to be their savior. However, once he learned the truth from Erza and Simon, Shô was broken over having been betrayed and allied with Erza to defeat Jellal.[293] As a result, Jellal's friendship with Shô ended. Jellal however, freed from his control, is genuinely sorry and guilty towards what he did to Shô and the others. Main article: Wally Buchanan Jellal and Wally have known each other since they were children as they were both enslaved in the Tower of Heaven and both were part of a small group of children lead by Jellal, developing a close relationship during their time together. When Jellal was possessed and, making everyone believe Erza betrayed them by blowing up the ships, Wally stayed with Jellal to help finish the tower. However, once Wally discovered the truth, he became disheartened and confused, realizing Jellal had betrayed him. Like Shô and Millianna, Wally's friendship ended with Jellal due to his betrayal. Jellal however, freed from his control, is genuinely sorry and guilty towards what he did to Wally and the others. Main article: Simon Jellal and Simon have known each other since they were children as they were both enslaved in the Tower of Heaven and both were part of a small group of children lead by Jellal, developing a close relationship during their time together. When Jellal was possessed and, making everyone believe Erza betrayed them by blowing up the ships, Simon stayed with Jellal to help finish the tower. However, unlike the others, Simon knew all along that Jellal was lying and knew Erza didn't betray them, waiting for the right time to take him down.[294] When Jellal tried to kill Erza and Natsu, Simon stepped in and protected them and died as a result, prompting Jellal starts badmouthing Simon's death, calling it foolish and useless, which made Natsu enraged and punch him angrily and eat the Lacrima to defeat Jellal. When Jellal was revived by Wendy and, having amnesia, unable to remember what he did Erza explained to him all the bad things he did and how he killed Simon, causing Jellal to break into tears, disgusted after realizing what he did, even calling himself a monster for what he did to Simon.[295][296] He even tried to kill himself with a self-destruction spell to atone for what he did to Simon, that is, until Erza stopped him and convinced him to live. After he regained his memories, Jellal has shown to still be guilty over killing Simon and was even fully prepared to let Erza kill him to avenge Simon, however, Erza claims Simon would not want that.[297] Simon's death also caused Jellal to feel a strong need of atonement over the years and continue to repress his feelings for Erza believing he doesn't deserve her.
Main articles: Brain Brain was once a mentor to Jellal while Jellal was still possessed and young. Brain would actually be amazed by Jellal's potential at such a young age such as being able to master the self-destruction Magic that he taught to Jellal.[298] When Jellal needed to be revived, Brain had Wendy revive him to know the location of Nirvana. However, he was attacked by Jellal due to the latter being amnesiac. When Jellal tried to destroy Nirvana, Brain mocks Jellal for trying to destroy it with the spell he taught him and even laughs at him after realizing Jellal doesn't remember anything.[299] Once Brain turned into Zero, Jellal arrived at the number one Lacrima to help Natsu defeat him by protecting him from his attack and giving Natsu the strength to enter his Dragon Force mode to defeat him and destroy the Lacrima.[300] |

Later, when Lyon, Gray and Natsu all wreak havoc on the Love Love Slider, both Jellal and Erza get swept up and end up riding the slide together. As they go down, Erza realizes her bikini is fraying, and presses herself up against Jellal, trying to shield herself from being seen, overwhelming the blue-haired Mage. Trivia
- In the manga, during his fight with Erza in the Tower of Heaven arc, Jellal's attire is especially designed to withstand disintegration whilst he is using his Meteor spell. Though in the anime, he appears to be wearing a skin-tight sleeveless black shirt with cargo pants instead.[9][10]
- During the Tower of Heaven arc, Jellal's coat possesses a design or mark that looks similar to the Fairy Tail symbol backwards.
- In the anime version of the Oración Seis arc, Jellal takes his cloak from Erigor, rather than a member of Naked Mummy.[12][11]
- Jellal's Heavenly Body Magic seal is the same as Lucy's Urano Metria Magic seal.[309][310]
- Jellal, as Siegrain, was on Lucy's "Perfect Boyfriend" list, right on top of Loke.[311]
- Jellal was the one who gave Erza her last name: Scarlet.[312]
Quotes
- (To Erza Scarlet) "Erza... Freedom is not a thing that exists in this world."[313]
- (To Erza Scarlet) "That's your precious "freedom"! Go on and live while carrying the lives of your nakama upon your back, Erza!" [314]
- (To Erza Scarlet) "Life and death are the very basis of all things; they intensify every emotion. Or, to put it in a rather different way, there is nothing quite so dull as "life"."[315]
- (To Erza Scarlet) "This is my sin for giving in to my own weaknesses. My heart just couldn't keep up with the gigantic gap between dreams and reality." [316]
- (To Natsu Dragneel) "You are even more irrational than the rumors say. Did you enjoy striking one of your own nakama who couldn't even move?"[317]
- (To Erza Scarlet) "Erza... I can feel kindness from that name... I can feel kindness, cheerfulness and warmth... I'm sure you'll continue to hate me, but I can't help that. It's only natural. But hatred will steal the freedom from your heart. It will eat away at you from within. I can't go that far. I can't go before you! You will be free from Jellal. I will take your hatred and sadness... with me... You are... free!"[318]
- (To himself about Erza Scarlet) "It's your words that gave me courage. It became my light that would guide me towards the right path again."[28]
- (To Erza Scarlet) "Such beautiful scarlet hair....Why don't we call you 'Erza Scarlet'? It's the color of your hair, that way, I won't forget it!"[231]
- (To Angel, Cobra and Racer) "Your freedom is still but a lie. And so it will stay, as long as you remain taken by darkness!"[319]
